Advantech Enhances Industrial Computer Reliable Storage with Serial ATA RAID Solutions

More cost-effective, better expansion capacity, and faster data backup

As a world-leader in industrial computing, Advantech is devoted to creating reliable and feature-rich solutions with leading technology for customers. Integrating with Intel®’s chipset, Advantech’s new industrial computers provide software Serial ATA (SATA) Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) technology with RAID 0, 1 function to offer safe and cost-effective storage solutions. RAID technology is ideal for a variety of industrial-grade applications that require higher data transfer rates, mass data storage and high reliability. Together with a complete spectrum of rack-mounted chassis and our global system assembly service, Advantech offers you the best computing platform solutions without compromising service, reliability, scalability, or availability.

Serial ATA RAID on the Rise

More and more businesses depend on reliable storage solutions for high-speed file sharing, data-intensive applications, and managing large volumes of data backups. Whether it is an array using IDE/ATA, SATA, SCSI or Fibre Channel, computers with RAID-configured systems more effectively protect data from hardware failure.

SATA RAID systems have become the popular choice as a highly reliable but inexpensive storage solution. SATA RAID solutions provide many advantages over conventional systems. Low cost for high performance is the major benefit. Typically, a SCSI RAID system offers outstanding performance and high reliability at a premium cost. State-of-the-art SATA RAID incorporates significant technical enhancements at an affordable price over Parallel ATA (PATA) hard drives.

Another advantage of SATA RAID is its excellent performance. Users of the SATA interface benefit from greater speed, upgradeable storage devices, and easier configuration. Through point-to-point topology, SATA RAID eliminates the bottleneck of a shared bus and improves data transmission with 150 MB/s bandwidth (SATA hard drive) or 300 MB/s bandwidth (SATA-II hard drive), much faster than the 100/133 MHz PATA RAID. SATA also improves system airflow by using new, thinner data and power cables to simplify the connection between the host board and the data storage devices, making the system free from overheating. This is an important advantage, especially in industrial applications where the operating environments are harsh and reliability is paramount.

Advantech’s Software Serial ATA RAID Solutions

Adopting Intel®’s latest chipset and value-added software, Advantech implements SATA RAID solutions into new industrial computers. With a set of kernel modules to implement RAID purely in software and management utilities that require no additional hardware, software SATA RAID tends to be a more flexible and cost-effective storage solution than hardware SATA RAID. As a result, software SATA RAID solutions are well-suited to the small and mid-range enterprise market.

Targeted to optimize storage solutions for a variety of entry-level markets, Advantech incorporates software SATA technology with RAID 0 (stripping) and RAID 1 (disk mirroring) support via the Intel® 6300ESB which can be configured for either a standard SATA array or RAID 0,1 through BIOS settings. These software SATA RAID solutions provide customers with cost-effective, high-performance storage, greater data transmission bandwidth, and redundant data protection.

Advantech provides a wide selection of standardized form factors that enable customers to meet their exact application needs without compatibility concerns. With different processor technologies and functional needs across form factors that range from industrial ATX motherboards, PICMG® single board computers (SBCs) to rackmount IPC chassis and desktop/wallmount IPC chassis, all standard platforms are ideal for diversified industrial applications such as multimedia, applications in kiosk/POI/POS market applications, medical computing, and military and mission-critical systems.

AIMB-744: Advantech Industrial Intel® Pentium® 4 ATX Motherboard

Advantech Intel® Processor-based Industrial ATX Motherboard

Advantech’s industrial ATX motherboards provide an ideal solution for customers who are using commercial off-the-self products but require industrial features such as longevity, reliability, and manageability. Designed with system compatibility considerations, Advantech’s industrial motherboards not only minimize the complexity of system integration with the unified location of I/O ports, but offer enough flexibility for ISA, PCI, PCI-X, and AGP cards. To offer a cost-effective but high performance storage solutions, Advantech’s AIMB-744 and AIMB-750 industrial motherboard series supports software SATA RAID 0/1 functions, the next generation of Advantech ATX motherboards, the AIMB-760 series, will furthermore support software SATA RAID 0/1/10 too.

The AIMB-744 uses the Intel® 875P and 6300ESB chipset to support Intel® Socket 478 Pentium® 4 and Celeron® processors with 800/533/400 MHz Front Side Bus (FSB). The dual channel Error Checking and Correction (ECC) DDR 400/333/266 SDRAM interface provides bottleneck-free memory with bandwidth up to 6.4 GB/s. The Intel® 6300ESB features two high-performance SATA interfaces (up to 150 MB/s each) and supports two independent SATA hard drives using RAID 0/1. Other features include two 64-bit PCI-X (66MHz) slots, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and four USB 2.0 ports (up to 480 Mbps).

The AIMB-750 is designed with the Intel® 855GME and 6300ESB chipset using integrated, on-board VGA to support the Intel® Pentium® M and Celeron® M processor with 400 MHz FSB. It features single-channel ECC DDR 333/266/200 SDRAM, EIDE interfaces (up to four devices), two 64-bit PCI-X (66MHz) slots, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, four USB 2.0 ports (up to 480 Mbps) and two high-performance SATA interfaces (up to 150MB/s). AIMB-744 also supports SATA RAID 0/1.

Advantech’s Intel® Processor-based PICMG® SBC

Advantech’s SBCs have a 2-edge connected hybrid architecture that incorporates both PCI and ISA buses, providing economical, expandable solutions for desktop and embedded applications. Advantech’s new PICMG® SBCs PCA-6189 and PCA-6188, supporting up to two SATA devices, are the ideal answer for those who need low price, high-performance RAID-based systems.
