Portwell Announces New Ultra Compact X86-Based Telematics System For Fleet Tracking, Management And Navigation

New PCS-8270 and family of telematics solutions to be featured at NAFA Institute & Expo in Charlotte, NC on April 10 and April 11

FREMONT, CALIF. —April 5, 2011—American Portwell Technology, Inc., www.portwell.com, a wholly owned subsidiary of Portwell, Inc., a world-leading innovator in the Industrial PC (IPC) market and an Associate member of the Intel® Embedded Alliance, announces the PCS-8270 x86-computer-based telematics system. The PCS-8270 system provides in-vehicle information in a rugged, compact and flexible format as required for fleet management, navigation and real-time fleet tracking. The PCS-8270 is packed into a fan-less ruggedized enclosure that measures only 5.74˝ x 7.72˝ x 2.13˝ (146 x 196 x 54 mm), which makes it easy to install in a vehicle’s tight space. A host of features include integrated Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GSM; GPS; dual-display output; solid state disk (SSD) and a wide range DC power input that spans 9 to 27V. Avoiding rotating parts improves reliability by freeing the device from concerns caused by dust penetration and eliminating bearings as points of failure. Its modularized I/O design provides ODMs with the flexibility to configure I/O ports and radio transmitters and receivers for a variety of applications, including fleet navigation, real-time fleet tracking and fleet dispatch management.

NAFA Institute & Expo
American Portwell will be demonstrating the new PCS-8270 and a host of other telematics solutions in the American Portwell Technology Booth #206 at the NAFA Institute & Expo in Charlotte, NC on April 10 and April 11, 2011.

The most compact solution on the market
According to George Liao, product marketing manager at American Portwell Technology, Inc., the new PCS-8270 is currently one of the most compact x86-based telematics solutions on the market. “Built with an Intel® processor, our PCS-8270 telematics solution delivers great multitasking performance, enabling one single system to process different tasks simultaneously without using multiple control units,” explains Liao. “The fan-less design makes the system easy to install without worrying about air flow, while the multiple wireless communication options and dual display output enhance its flexibility. Its built-in GPS function assures fast positioning and accurate tracking and navigation. Not only that,” Liao adds, “but it’s also easy to change the I/O configuration without having to modify the CPU board. What’s more, a wide DC power input ensures that the system is more tolerant to typical vehicle power transients than other embedded PC-based approaches.”

Faster application development and long product life cycle support
Furthermore Liao points out that x86-based architecture of the new PCS-8270 allows software developers the ability to create applications faster and easier than a comparable RISC-based platform. “We have managed to place a host of useful features into the 2.1” low-profile platform and fan-less enclosure,” Liao confirms. “Our customers not only benefit from Portwell’s ability to consistently provide the most up-to-date technology and features,” Liao continues “but they also gain peace of mind from the long life cycle support inherent with Portwell’s embedded-focused products.”
