PC/104 Single Board Computer uses CoreExpress® Modules

PC/104 single board computers are in many cases equipped with fairly mature processor platforms which do not use current motherboard infrastructures. These platforms are either consuming high power or providing only basic performance and limited I/O bandwidth. The new CoreExpress carrier, named “Cool LiteRunner-ECO” from LiPPERT Embedded Computers provides a flexible solution.

The new PC/104 Cool LiteRunner-ECO is designed to be a carrier board for a CoreExpress advanced computer on module (CoM). Currently available from LiPPERT are modules using Intel’s Atom processors. The Cool LiteRunner-ECO can hold any of these, either the brand-new CoreExpress-ECO2 with the E6xxT Processor, or the well-established CoreExpress-ECO with a Z5xx Processor. Both modules feature rather low levels of power consumption.

The PC/104 carrier is internally using the PCI-Express infrastructure to add I/O functionalities, which are not natively supported by the core processor module. With this structure, the Cool LiteRunner-ECO offers the following setup:
• 2 x SATA II
• 2 x GBit Ethernet
• Graphics support by VGA & LVDS
• 6 x USB 2.0
• HD‐Audio
• 2 x COM, LPT, PS/2 and GPIO
• 1 x Micro/SD slot and 1 x Mini‐PCIe slot

Due to the nature of PC/104 the traditional ISA – Bus is used for stackable expansion boards.

“We are very excited about the possibility to bring the latest Intel low power technology into applications that are traditionally bound to the PC/104 concept. The Cool LiteRunner-ECO supports all CoreExpress modules currently available. Our customers can take advantage of a very flexible and scalable solution portfolio without changing their basic system approach”, says Markus Friese, the product manager of LiPPERT Embedded Computers.

The system is supported by various operating systems like Windows CE, Windows XP/XP embedded, VxWorks, QNX and Linux. The integrated system management controller adds health-monitoring functions (LEMT) to the system.

LiPPERT offers the Cool LiteRunner-ECO for operation in standard and industrial operating temperature ranges. On request, models qualified for extended ambient temperatures of -40°C…+85°C are also available.
