CoreExpress® Carrier Board Constitutes Flexible PC/104 Single Board Computer

PC/104 single board computers are in many cases equipped with fairly mature processor platforms which do not comply with current motherboard infrastructures. These platforms are either consuming high power or providing only basic performance and limited I/O bandwidth. The new CoreExpress carrier ‘Cool LiteRunner-ECO’ from LiPPERT Embedded Computers GmbH provides a flexible solution.

The new PC/104 Cool LiteRunner-ECO is designed to be a carrier board for a CoreExpress advanced computer on module (CoM). The board specifically supports LiPPERT’s ultra small “CoreExpress-ECO”. Intel’s Atom processor family Z5xx and US15W chipset power this first and well-established CoreExpress-ECO module. With 1.1 GHz to 1.6 GHz and various memory configurations, the module stays in a TDP range of 5 W max. It actually provides the best performance per watt ratio on the market. With the integrated video acceleration hardware, it even plays full HD videos with a CPU load of less than 15%. A heat spreader can cool the whole stack passively without blocking the stackability on the top side.

The PC/104 carrier is internally using the PCI-Express infrastructure to add I/O functionalities, which are not natively supported by the core processor module.
With this structure, the Cool LiteRunner-ECO offers the following setup:

  • 2 x SATA II
  • 2 x GBit Ethernet
  • Graphics support by VGA & LVDS
  • 6 x USB 2.0
  • HD‐Audio
  • 2 x COM, LPT, PS/2 and GPIO
  • 1 x Micro/SD slot and 1 x Mini‐PCIe slot
Due to the nature of PC/104 the traditional ISA – Bus is used for stackable expansion boards.

“We are very excited about the possibility to bring the latest Intel low power technology into applications that are traditionally bound to the PC/104 concept. The Cool LiteRunner-ECO is the first of a growing product family. Our customers can take advantage of a very flexible and scalable solution portfolio without changing their basic system concept”, says Markus Friese, the product manager of LiPPERT Embedded Computers.

The system is supported by various operating systems like Win CE, Win XP/XP embedded, VxWorks, QNX and Linux. The integrated system management controller adds health-monitoring functions (LEMT) to the system.

LiPPERT offers the Cool LiteRunner-ECO for operation in standard and industrial operating temperature ranges. On request, models qualified for extended ambient temperatures of
-40°C…+85°C are also available.
