The Cool RoadRunner-Atom with Intel N270 processor: Low power consumption and Solid State Disk for mobile embedded computing

LiPPERT Embedded Computers offers a new processor board using the Intel® Atom™ processor N270. With 1.6GHz, up to 2GB RAM and 2GB Solid State Disk, the board is particularly suitable for mobile embedded systems where lowest power consumption is indispensable.

With the Cool RoadRunner-Atom, LiPPERT adds another cleverly designed PC/104-Plus board to its product range. The used Intel Atom N270 processor, clocked at 1.6 GHz, supports Hyper-Threading and features a thermal design power (TDP) of just 2.5 watts, leading to very low power requirements for the complete single board computer. The board can be equipped with a maximum of 2 GB soldered down DDR2-533 RAM.

The graphics and memory controller 82945GSE with integrated GMA950 graphics controller works in conjunction with the Atom processor and supports 3D rendering, significantly speeding up graphics intensive applications. UXGA displays with up to 2048x1536 pixels can be connected via VGA or LVDS interfaces.

An ICH7M I/O controller hub with PCI Express provides most of the Cool RoadRunner-Atom’s interfaces. There are Gigabit Ethernet LAN and eight USB2.0 host ports available for the application. A SuperIO chip features two flexibly configurable serial interfaces. RS232, RS422 or RS485 can be independently selected.

Also integrated on-board, a large 2 GB solid state disk (SSD) featuring more than 100.000 write cycles and wear leveling can be used to build systems without moving parts. Two SATA ports with standard connectors allow connection of conventional hard disks.

If needed, the Cool RoadRunner-Atom can be functionally extended using the PC/104 (ISA) bus or the PC/104-Plus (PCI) bus.

The board's total power consumption is just a mere 5 watts.  The Cool RoadRunner-Atom is available for operation in the industrial temperature range of -20°C…+60°C. Optionally available are variants qualified for extended ambient temperature ranges of -40°C…+85°C.

The Cool RoadRunner-Atom comes with LiPPERT Enhanced Management Technology (LEMT). Its functions are implemented with an integrated micro controller. Among them are housekeeping tasks like power sequencing as well as utility functions for the application software. There is, for instance, write/delete protected flash memory. Several counters of various operating states make the board usable for remote condition monitoring.

The Cool RoadRunner-Atom runs Windows XP, XP Embedded, Windows CE, Linux, and QNX operating systems.
